This one is strictly for the Parade Count crowd.
Yeah these kids:
And believe you me this isn’t about putting anyone in their place or telling these kids not to celebrate winning or even some “back in my day” diatribe or any other Shank Shaughnessy style BS.
No. That’s not it. And it never was it.
The New England Patriots were a mediocre franchise for a looong time. Prior to 2001 every season was a roll of the dice. 11-5 or 5-11 were equally possible. You just didn’t know. And one seasons success or failure had no bearing on the next. There was no momentum good or bad. Like the Lil’ Dogg tells his lil’ pups – you get what you get and you don’t get upset.
Then the Krafts and Belichick and Brady happened and expectations got all out of whack. It was Super Bowl Champs or bust for 20 years.
There are a few fan bases that have had runs like these – the early Century NY Yankees, the 50-60s Boston Celtics, the John Wooden UCLA Bruins basketball era – what the New England Patriots did for 20 years is not unprecedented but it is special. And it should be remembered as such.
But that’s exactly what it is now – a memory.
The New England Patriots are now back to firmly being mediocre. And with a few more bad decisions they could slip even further (farther? that one is always tricky) into the abyss.
The Patriots share a conference with the KC Chiefs who (the Brady Stans will love this) have a QB who is already beyond obviously the most talented person to ever play NFL QB. Brady was an unprecedented winner but talent wise he isn’t even on the same planet as Patrick Mahomes. And we already know Mahomes can win. That’s what the Pats are up against for the next 10-15 years. That’s the new reality.
Enjoy the memory of the Parade Years but it’s not happening again anytime soon. The Patriots are a mess. Again. They were a mess for many years and it’ll probably be many more before they aren’t anymore. Maybe they’ll luck into the next Mahomes. More likely they won’t. Dynasties don’t last forever – just ask the Romans.
So sit back, relax, think fondly of the good years but remember- You get what you get and you don’t get upset.
