Hi-Top Golf – Previewing TPC Sawgrass (Where The Players Ball)

TPC Sawgrass hold a special place in most golf fans’ hearts for several different reasons.

The Par 3 17th with its “Island Green” is one of the most recognizable holes in the entire world.

There are a few factors that make the Island Green so great. First off placing the hole at #17 is just pure brilliance. If this hole was early in a round then it becomes mere novelty. And putting it at 18 would just be too cruel. But at 17 it’s perfect. The ultimate penultimate hole.

Introducing Tiger Woods

The other reason Sawgrass is special has to do of course with Tiger. Woods won his first (of 3 consecutive) US Amateur titles back in 1994 at TPC Sawgrass and that was the first real Tiger Experience for most of us. Sure even casual sports fans knew of Tiger in the early 90s but to actually see him in action in a competition was truly something else.

Tiger mounted an epic comeback to nab his first US Amateur and it was truly the dawning of a new era in golf.

The fist pumps. The emotion. The will to win at all costs. It was all there on full display at age 18 and the world was hooked. Tiger Woods Mega Star was born at TPC Sawgrass in 1994.

Another epic Tiger moment also took place at The Players Championship back in 2001 and yes it was “better than most”:

This Year’s Field

Webb Simpson is reigning champ but that doesn’t mean much cuz there has actually never been a repeat Champion at Sawgrass.

There’s a few names heating up right now who have been off to hot starts this season – Rory, Rickie, DJ and you can never count out the Justins and the killer B crew of Brooks and Bryson. And of course there’s always Tiger.

But who has the best shot at winning this year?

The Italiano Molinari always plays well at Sawgrass but back to back wins on Tour is a rare feat these days. The Lil’ Dogg does have his eye on a couple of other foreigners to take the crown though. Hi-Top favorite Tommy Fleetwood Mac is still looking for his first PGA Tour win and is playing some mighty fine golf. And so is his fellow countryman the Baby Faced Assassin Mathew Fitzpatrick.

Hi-Top’s Winning Pick

The Mad Scientist himself is the Lil’ Dogg’s pick this week. Bryson DeChambeau will take the top spot. Mark it.
