The US Open Round 1 winner at Shinnecock Hills was without a doubt…Shinnecock Hills.
The course dominated the players and it was not even close. Only four players finished under par and only just barely at -1. Tied for first after Thursday are DJ, Russell Henley, Ian Poulter and Scott Piercy.
Things were rough (get it…cuz the rough was real bad…):
If you didn’t stick your ball to the green it was liable to roll off or even worse, right back to where you started:
Okay that last one was just dumb luck but plenty of guys had shots that they thought were going to be ten feet from the hole only to end up rolling off the back side of the green and then down a hill and finally stop forty yards away.
Conditions remain dry which are causing the extra fast greens but on the plus side the Friday wind is expected to be down significantly from the gusts of Thursday. Scores should reflect the friendlier weather. This is when the big guns want to make their moves.
Woods struggled early in Round 1 before settling down for a bit before dropping two double bogeys on the back nine to finish 8 over par. If the Tiger wants to prowl this weekend then he will need some of that old magic back.
