US Open Day 1 – Will Phil keep dropping deuces?

Phil Mickelson has had more number 2s at the US Open than Le Cap after a night of drinking Bud Heavies. Six times ol’ Phil has come in second at the US Open and its the only major keeping him from a career Grand Slam.

At the 2013 US Open Phil started the final day in the lead, let it slip away then regained the lead only to eventually end tied for second. The kicker – it was both Father’s Day and his birthday. Ouch!

Can Phil Win at Shinnecock?

Maybe.

Phil has notched a win so far this season but winning at Shinnecock will be a tough ask for anyone let alone a 47 year old.

The key for Mickelson will be getting out to fast start and riding the momentum. If Phil can get up among the leaders on Thursday and Friday then his experience could keep him in the mix through the weekend,

Only 5 players in Golf’s history have won the career Grand Slam – Gene Sharazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. That’s some extremely esteemed company right there and would leave no question marks on Phil’s career if he could accomplish the feat.
