Hi-Top Golf – US Open Preview

Golf’s Major #2 – the US Open – kicks off this week at Shinnecock Hills.

Here’s a link to some lovely pictures of the course:

Shinnecock is an old course, a USGA original and this will be the fifth time the course has hosted the Open.

The last time Shinnecock played host things went…not so well. Only two players, Winner Retief Goosen and Phil Mickelson managed to stay under par. Things were tough.

Why is Shinnecock so tough????

Located in Southampton NY on Long Island by the ocean the wind whips and whirls and the ball gets abused. Think you’re putting it one place and it ends up another.

Another factor will be the notorious rough. Birdieing or saving par from outside the fairway ain’t happening. You better hit that fairway if you want to score.

So who will be in contention?

Dustin Johnson is riding the momentum wave at the moment having taken the World #1 ranking over the past weekend with a dominant win at St. Jude’s.

Some big names have been holed up (get it) in Long Island for awhile now trying to adjust their game to the areas conditions. Will it produce results for McIlroy and Mickelson?

The Vegas odds have DJ and Rory 1 and 2 with Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler and Justin Rose next up at 14-1.

Tiger Tiger Woods Y’all. The Tiger is at 18-1 and has had some strong showings this year so far but a course that punishes severely for any slight mistakes will not be kind for Tiger. Hi-Top predicts a tough few days for 🐅.

So who’s the Dark Horse?

Hi-Top is staking Henrik Stenson to be among the leaders. Stenson has hit 326 out of a possible 418 fairways this season and leads the Tour in Driving Accuracy. He has big time wins in his career and a recent strong 5th place showing at the Masters.

Pro Tip:

Put a finski on Stenson and then thank Hi-Top with a round at the 19th Hole.
