The Pats have traded Brandin Cooks to the Rams for the #23 overall pick in the draft (they also swapped a 4 for a 6). HUGE move by Bill here.
I love the move from a value standpoint. They gave up the #31 pick for two years of Cooks, then gave up a year of that for a higher pick? No brainer.
But I’m not going to be some run-of-the-mill Tony Mazz over here, and pretend Cooks sucks or something. He was their best wide receiver last year. He didn’t prove to come up big in big games, but on a talent and performance basis, it was not close.
I also don’t think it’s a stretch to say that in 2018, he’d be better than Edelman coming back off an ACL at 32. I think #11 is going “struggle” this year. Not that he’ll be bad, but especially early on, he isn’t going to carry them.
With that all being said…you can’t pass on this deal. It’s too good.
Now they have a ton of options. They can try to get Brady’s replacement. They can get a top tackle. They can draft a WR…a TE…a D-lineman. They can move up, move down….SHIT, they can do ALL of that, they have 5 picks in the top 95. The flexibility this gives them is key.
It’s not like they are going to be hurting at WR. They have plenty of guys and as they’ve shown before, you don’t need to be a great WR to be a great WR with #12. Don’t forget they have Gronk. I mean, we think they do. If they don’t, well their probably screwed anyway, having Cooks wasn’t going to change that.
So, I’m officially excited for the Draft now. Dying to know what’s going to happen. I’m also hereby ordering bennygloves to double his efforts on draft coverage!!! You hear that benny????
