Beanpot Recap

I know this is a few days late, but it took me some time to get over the events of this past weekend.

This past Monday was round 1 for the 66th annual BU Invitational ….I mean….. Beanpot Tournament. For those of you not familiar with this event, the 4 Boston based DI NCAA Mens Ice Hockey teams (Boston University, Boston College, Harvard and Northeastern)  play for bragging rights of the city.  For those of you who are familiar with it you will know its a pretty big deal in Boston. By far the biggest college sports event in the city, that doesnt evolve around mass amounts of drinking…ie the Marathon

To date BU has won the event 30 times, BC 20, Harvard 11 and Northeastern 4..yes 4..in 65 years..4. All you have to do is win 2 games.

So game 1 on Monday saw Northeastern, who is this years tournament favorites, take on the BC Eagles. This game was all Northeastern. The Huskies scored a goal per period to win 3-0. Cayden Primeau pitched a 37 save shutout. The Huskies are ranked 11th in the nation and have their best chance to win the Pot since 1988.

Game 2 was a battle between last years champions, the Harvard Crimson, and the Beanpot powerhouse BU Terriers. Even when they are having a bad year the Terriers always seem to find a way to win this thing. Having said that, their last title was in 2015. This game was a classic. The game was tied 1-1 heading into the third period. BU took the lead :32 seconds into the final frame, but Harvard tied it back up a minute and a half later. It would stay locked at 2 for rest of the period and through the first overtime.

It wasn’t until Ty Amonte, son of former NHLer and former BU player Tony Amonte, ended the game with a great solo effort.

We are now set for the finals next Monday.

Predictions: In the “Who Cares” or consolation game we have BC vs Harvard. Harvard will be without their best offensive player (Bruins draft pick and son of Harvard head coach and former Bruin Ted Donato) Ryan Donato , who is skipping the Beanpot to play in some tournament in Seoul, South Korea. BC is standing at 18th in the nation and are quietly putting together a decent season and are a top the Hockey East standings. Who wins? Harvard. I cant ever route for BC. Sorry.

Championship game: Northeastern is the favorite and should win this one. They are having a great year and deserve to win. BU has a very strong team and have been on a hot streak as of late. However, they will be without 2 of their top offensive players, Jordan Greenway (Olympics) and Patrick Harper (injured). NO Greenway, No Harper, No Bueno for the Terriers. Even with a first rounder in net and all 6 D having been drafted 3 rd or higher, the Terriers rely on a young group up front. I think Northeastern has the experience and it just seems to be their year.

The past 3 years has seen 3 different Beanpot champions. ’15 BU, ’16 BC, ’17 Harvard. If Northeastern does win this will only be the 2nd time all four teams have won in consecutive years. Only other time was 1981-1984.

Enjoy the game Monday! Go Terriers!

PS. The Beanpot Trophy is heavy. Just some inside information.

    • You are right. Didn’t even realize that. Mostly because I didn’t know the Northeastern coach played there. I know for a fact the other three are alumi
