The 2013 Red Sox World Series run was a big boost to the city of Boston, coming off the Marathon Bombing, and 5 years with only one parade in town- the 2011 Bruins.
Well, Boston fans (and bullpen cop), there is a team out there now- perhaps bolstered by UCF’s “claiming” of this years National Title in college football- threatening to stake a claim at the title of 2013 World Series Champions.
With their moves in recent weeks, the San Francisco Giants appear to be building a juggernaut to compete in 2013…and perhaps add an odd-year title to go with their 3 rings this decade (’10, ’12, ’14).
The Giants already have some 2013 Studs on their roster. Buster Posey, who followed up his All-Time great MVP 2012 with another spectacular 2013 (134 OPS+, 5.0 WAR), Hunter Pence (133 OPS+ and 3.8 WAR) and Madison Bumgarner who boasted a 2.77 ERA and a 1.033 WHIP over 200+ innings, and a top 10 Cy Young finish.
Also still on the roster are 2013 Breakout Brandon Belt (139 OPS+ 4.2 WAR) and solid post-season contributor Pablo Sandoval.
The Giants finished 14 games out of a Wild Card in 2013, so they had some work to do if they want to get into the playoffs…let alone claim a title. Well, the progressive front office set out to do just that.
In the past 30 days the Giants have acquired two top MLB players (in 2013), Evan Longoria and Andrew McCutchen.
Longoria, the long time Ray, played 160 Games in 2013 with a 133 OPS+ and a whopping 6.2 WAR- numbers he hasn’t flirted with since- and belted 32 HR’s, 91 Runs and 88 RBI. I expect the RBI and runs numbers to be much higher when he’s in the middle of the 2013 Giants lineup.
McCutchen was the 2013 NL MVP, with a .911 OPS (157 OPS+), and an 8.1 WAR (6.7 Over his last 3 years combined). He will mark a 7.3 win improvement over ’13 CF Angel Pagan…almost single-handedly putting them in the middle of the pennant race.
In my mind, the Giants are just one or two relatively minor moves away from attaining their 2013 Glory (in 2018).
I might suggest pursuing Greg Holland to bolster the back end of the bullpen- his 2017 marked a fairly successful return after a missed year, but his 2013 was exceptional. A mere 5 years ago Holland boasted a 13.8 K/9, a .866 WHIP and a ridiculous 3.8 WAR out of the bullpen, en route to a top 10 Cy Young Finish. That type of lock down reliever, might lock down the claim to the 2013 Title.
So, Red Sox fans, I’m sorry to say…we might be looking at a big fat * for the 2013 World Series Title, as clearly the Giants are taking this claim seriously. Honestly, if it means we can eliminate Bullpen cop from history…I might be ok with it.
